Hello and welcome.
As a long term fan of the Shenmue saga, I feel it is important to keep the Shenmue III flame burning, and that is why I have created this page.
For me, at the time I never really understood how the two games never achieved the potential commercial success that I personally believed they warranted. However when you put this into context with the poor sales of the Dreamcast, it becomes harrowingly clear that the games were destined to fail from the start.
According to IGN, in order to cover the reported $70 million (£45 million) production costs, every single Dreamcast owner worldwide would have had to purchase the game twice over. Although this has since been discredited by Yu Suzuki's recent announcement that the two games cost a total of $47 million-that still would mean that each Dreamcast owner would have had to buy almost 1.5 copies.
It would have been interesting to see how the series would have turned out had it not been doomed (sales-wise) from the start.
